1 Adversity is a reality of life, which either conquers us with a state of hopelessness or bolsters within the tunnel of faith. Walt Disney, who died in 1966, reflected: All the adversity I ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you. Disney faced multiple rejections to get Mickey Mouse on the success map, as did Charles Schulz (died in 2000) with Charlie Brown. With the new baseball season at large, executive with the Chicago Cubs, commented: Baseball is a game based on adversity. It s a game that s going to test you repeatedly. It s going to find your weaknesses and vulnerabilities and force you to adjust. That adversity, in the big picture, is a really good thing because it shows you where your weaknesses are. It gives you the opportunity to improve. Rose Kennedy, who died in 1995, said: Prosperity tries the fortunate, adversity the great... I am not going to be licked by tragedy, as life is a challenge, and we must carry on and work for the living as well as mourn for the dead... I tell myself that God gave my children many gifts - spirit, beauty, intelligence, the capacity to make friends and to inspire respect. There was only one gift He held back - length of life... I have come to the conclusion that the most important element in human life is faith. In my twenty-five years of priesthood, I have had to weather a fair share of adversities. There have been the pressures of pastoring, especially with parishes struggling for survival. The emotional drains of helping others to face their burdens leaves their scars on me also. While the vast amount of parishioners and situations have been faith-affirming, there are times when the reverse has been true. I remember well the father who threatened me when I tried to guide his daughter away from seeking an abortion, parishioners who perished in the September 11 attacks of 2001, burying a young man just days after counseling him toward a better path, final prayers over a man who had just been burned alive, bowing my head in sorrow over multiple suicides, and watching a few modern day Pharisees in action with their scurrilous comments about others in hypocritical judgment without examining their own faults and sinfulness hidden from public view. If I were not a man of faith, these adversities and more would simply crush me. However, God is good and bestows on us so many happy blessings to coincide with the beasts of burden. Heading home to Newburgh in the final third or so of my life has been transforming, meeting so many wonderful and faithful persons while cementing the most solid of friends in my life which we all need. I am aware of the inevitability of death, which is why legal documents have been prepared for my eventual burial at a vacant mausoleum in Saint Francis of Assisi Cemetery. I was a baby in the Newburgh area and will be buried here (with Moondoggie). I also know when an inspiring story of victory over adversity crosses my desk Julie Yip-Williams died on March 19 in Brooklyn, New York at the age of forty-two. She was born on January 6, 1976 in Tam Ky, South Vietnam. Her blindness at birth from congenital cataracts incredibly led to the efforts by her grandmother to kill her with poisons, in the hands of a herbalist. A great-grandmother intervened to save her from this dastardly evil attempt. Three years later in 1979 her family fled the Vietnam War for Hong Kong, taking one month by crickety boat with meager supplies of food and water. Later settling in Los Angeles, California Julie had eye surgery to restore some of her vision. She graduated from Harvard Law School in 2002, and worked in a New York law firm until her terminal diagnosis of colon cancer in In a blog she expressed these sentiments: Cancer crushes hope, leaving a wasteland of grief, depression, despair and a sense of unending futility. Hope is a funny thing, though. It seems to have a life and will of its own that I cannot control through the sheer force of my mind. It is irrepressible, its very existence inextricably tied to our very spirit, its flame, no matter how weak, not extinguishable. In July of 2017 this courageous woman from modern-day North Vietnam had these chilling yet uplifting words for her daughters: You will be deprived of a mother. As your mother, I wish I could protect you from the pain. But also as your mother, I want you to feel the pain, to live it, embrace it, and then learn from it. Be stronger people because of it, for you will know that you carry my strength within you. Be more compassionate people because of it; empathize with those who suffer in their own ways. Rejoice in life and all of its beauty because of it: live with special zest and zeal for life. My dear friends of Sacred Heart and Saint Francis of Assisi, most of us face nothing like Julie Zip-Williams endured. With God we can conquer in faith the obstacles and transitions of life which invade our inner and public circles, which Jesus well understood in His passion and death before the resurrection and ascension in divine light. Father Bill

3 II Kings 4:42-44 A man brought twenty loaves of bread to Elisha the prophet, who told his servant to distribute it to the people. The servant asked how he could offer twenty loaves to one hundred people. Elisha replied that God had said, They shall eat and there shall be some left over. After all the people had eaten, there was bread left over as God had said. Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul implores the Ephesians to live a life worthy of their calling by preserving unity among all of Christ s followers. He reminds them that there is one body, one Spirit, and one God who works through all people. John 6:1-15 Jesus fed a crowd of five thousand people with five loaves of bread and a couple of dried fish. After everyone present had enough to eat, twelve baskets of leftover bread were collected. Jesus then realized the people would want to make him king so he fled alone.
